The Sleep Cycle Calculator works backwards from your wake-up time to find the best bedtimes, based on the ~90-minute sleep cycles the brain repeats through the night. Waking between cycles — at the end of REM — leaves you far less groggy than an alarm in deep sleep.

Most adults feel best with five to six full cycles, or about 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep. Pick your wake time and the calculator lists bedtimes for 4 through 8 cycles, each with its total sleep hours, so you can choose how much rest your schedule allows.

Cycles vary from 80–110 minutes between people and across the night, so the times are a useful heuristic rather than precise biology. Allow about 15 minutes to fall asleep after getting into bed. Runs entirely in your browser.

Why does waking between cycles help?

Sleep alternates between light, deep and REM stages in ~90-minute cycles. An alarm in deep sleep causes sleep inertia — that heavy, groggy feeling. Waking in light sleep near a cycle boundary is far gentler.
