Wind strips the insulating layer of warm air your body and clothing hold; the faster the wind, the faster heat leaves exposed skin, and the risk of frostbite climbs quickly once the wind chill drops below about −25 °C. The standard formula (NWS/Environment Canada) captures exactly this physics.

How is wind chill calculated?
The standard formula: wind chill = 13.12 + 0.6215T − 11.37V^0.16 + 0.3965T·V^0.16 (°C, wind in km/h). It models heat loss from exposed skin and is valid only at or below 10 °C.
What wind chill is dangerous?
Frostbite risk to exposed skin starts around −25 °C wind chill and rises steeply below −35 °C — exposed skin can freeze in under 10 minutes. In those conditions, cover everything and limit time outside.
Why does my coat make the wind chill wrong?
Wind chill assumes exposed skin. With a windproof shell and good insulation, your real experience is warmer than the index — the formula measures what wind would do to you unprotected, which is also why it is the danger benchmark.
