The math is simple once you know the numbers: kilowatt-hours = watts ÷ 1000 × hours, and cost = kWh × your rate. A 3,000 W dryer run an hour a day at $0.15/kWh costs about $13.50 a month — the kind of figure that makes energy choices concrete. Comparing appliances side by side shows exactly where your bill goes.

Rated wattage is an estimate — fridges cycle on and off, TVs dim with content — so treat results as planning figures. Time-of-use tariffs can make the same kWh cost very different by hour. Runs entirely in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How is electricity cost calculated?

Cost = (watts ÷ 1000) × hours × rate. A 1,000 W appliance running 1 hour uses 1 kWh; at $0.15/kWh that is 15 cents. The calculator handles any wattage, duration and rate combination.

Where do I find my electricity rate?

On your utility bill — look for 'price per kWh', often split into supply and delivery charges that you add together. Time-of-use plans charge different rates by hour, which this flat-rate tool does not model.

Why is my bill higher than the sum of appliances?

Base fees, heating/cooling, water heating and standby draw (electronics in sleep mode) add up beyond listed appliances. Vampire load from always-on devices typically totals 5–10% of a home's bill.
