Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15% is the baseline for decent service, 18% is common, and 20% is the norm at full-service restaurants. For poor service, many people tip 10% or nothing. Outside the US, check local customs — in many countries a service charge is already on the bill or tipping is not expected.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax bill amount?
Convention in the US is to calculate the tip on the pre-tax amount. If your check shows the pre-tax subtotal, use that as the bill amount. Tipping on the taxed total is a friendly overpay of a few cents to a dollar — either is acceptable.
How do I split a bill fairly when people ordered different amounts?
If everyone ordered similar-priced items, an even split (this tool's default) is fine. If amounts differ a lot, add up each person's own items and run the calculator once per person with the split set to 1, using the same tip percentage.
Is the tip percentage applied before splitting?
Yes — this calculator computes the tip on the full bill, then divides the total evenly among the number of people. Each person's share therefore includes their fair part of the tip.
