Tax Calculator

Estimate your US federal income tax, FICA and take-home pay for 2025.

The Tax Calculator produces a clear, line-by-line estimate of what you will owe in US federal income tax for the 2025 tax year. Enter your annual income, choose single or married filing jointly, and it applies the standard deduction, walks your taxable income through the 2025 marginal brackets, and shows your marginal rate, effective rate and total federal tax.

For wage earners it also estimates FICA — Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus the extra 0.9% above the high-income threshold) — and applies an optional flat state rate if you enter one. The summary makes the whole picture visible: federal tax, payroll taxes, state estimate and the take-home amount left over.

This is a simplified educational estimator: it ignores credits, itemized deductions, dependents, capital gains, self-employment tax and most other complexities. Treat it as a planning tool and a way to understand how progressive brackets actually work — not as a substitute for filing software or a professional.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 2025 federal income tax brackets?

For single filers: 10% up to $11,925, 12% to $48,475, 22% to $103,350, 24% to $197,300, 32% to $250,525, 35% to $626,350, then 37%. Married filing jointly brackets are roughly double. Tax is applied progressively — only the income within each band is taxed at that band's rate, which is why the marginal rate is always higher than the effective rate.

What is the standard deduction for 2025?

The 2025 standard deduction is $15,000 for single filers and $30,000 for married couples filing jointly (heads of household get $22,500). It is subtracted from your gross income before the brackets apply, so it is the first line of the estimate.

What is FICA and who pays it?

FICA is the US payroll tax funding Social Security and Medicare: 6.2% for Social Security up to the $176,100 wage base and 1.45% for Medicare with no cap (plus 0.9% extra Medicare above $200,000 single / $250,000 joint). Employers match the base amounts for employees; self-employed people pay both halves through self-employment tax, which this estimator does not model.

Why doesn't my actual tax match this estimate?

Real returns include credits (Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Credit and others), itemized deductions, pre-tax benefits, dependents and non-wage income — all of which can substantially change the outcome. Use this for ballpark planning and understanding brackets; file with professional software or a tax pro for exact numbers.
